Q: How much should I ask for a 1974 Gran Torino 351w V8 & C4 With 45K Miles?
I’m lost and need a little help, I know nothing about the ford world.

I have a 1974 Gran Torino 351w & C4 In My Mazda Rx-7, it has 45,000 original miles because the car was wrecked from behind, how much is it worth? Runs great, doesn’t leak or burn a drop of oil.

Was asking $600 OBO and had multiple people interested, even had a guy say if he hadn’t bought one already he would of gave me $1000 to put in his car so I’m lost, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A: 500-600$ Seems fair.

Q: Horsepower of a 351w out of a 1974 Ford gran tornio??
I”m buying a Fairlane with a 351w out of a 1974 gran torino? could you tell me the (aprox) horsepower and torque? Thanks
also anybody know the weight (about) of a 64 fairlane? thanks again

A: While 285bhp may be correct, a couple of things have occured with the engine by 1974. First, in 1972, the engines were rated by net horsepower instead of brake horsepower (bhp). The difference is where the horsepower measurement was taken. For brake horsepower, the measurement was taken at the torque converter. For net horsepower, it was after the transmission. So brake horsepwer was a measurement of engine horsepower alone, while net horsepower was more of a true measurement of how much got to the rear wheels. Secondly, by 1974, the compression ratio was lowered to meet exhaust standards set by the government, so that also decreased horsepower. So a 1974 351W had more like 180 or so net horsepower stock. And torque for the stock engine will be somewhere in the low 200s. This is not to say that the engine is a dud. Stock form, well kinda is. But the potential for the engine, given the right combo of cam, pistons, etc. and it would be a real hellcat. And as far as weight is concerned, since the ‘64 is still one of the smaller Fairlanes, with the 351W it should go in the 3000 pound range give or take. You have potential there. That kind of engine/body combo would be a killer car. GO FOR IT!

Q: Is a 74′ Gran Torino a nice vehicle?
I am receiving a 1974 Ford Gran Torino from my Grandfather. It is a 4 door and it has been basically a showroom type car for many years. Its in unbelievable condition just because my grandfathers obsessive compulsiveness took very well care of the car. From what I understand its all original down to its 302 v8 engine. No scratches, dents, rust, ect.. Im starting to learn about classic cars and was wondering if this is a great car to own? Especially my first!!

Thanks

A: Sounds like you are receiving a great car,and already have a fantastic Grandfather.Since it is all original and runs great and excellent body,I don’t see why you can’t cruise the block every Sat.night and be very proud of your car and Grandfather.

Q: How much does it cost to reupholster a classic car interior?
The car is a 1974 Gran Torino. The current interior is in great shape, but it’s blue, and that’s got to go. So I will change it to black, how much does that cost to do?

A: All depends on where you go, what fabric you use and how much detail you want. There’s some really nice interiors out there, also some pretty basic/plain and downright butt-ugly ones. Upholstery work is usually pretty pricey either way.

Q: American Muscle.which car should i get and start to restore.?
1987 Buick Grand National
1972 Gran Torino
1974 Plymouth Duster
71′ Chevelle
Dodge Charger

i know all of these cars are unique in there own way
help pleaseee

A: I think right this minute, the grand national is the best investment. Don’t restore it, though. Just buy a decent one to start with.

Q: C4 transmission Problem, Can’t find park, reverse and there’s 2-3 neutral positions?
It’s impossible to find park, reverse and there’s probably 3 neutrals in my C4 transmission, it’s mated to a 351w and the entire drivetrain is out of a 1974 gran torino – Is the tranny junk? Or I heard it need’s adjusted possibly? Thanks a lot I appreciate any help.
I know this ;o)

I’m just saying when you shift the car, you can find reverse and you have to go through more than once neutral to find a gear.
The entire drivetrain came out of a 74 gran torino, and is now in an 84 Mazda Rx-7, I looked up pics of the torino and it doesnt have a floor shifter, so maybe thats it, I just bought the car with this problem.

A: since the torino is a column shift and the mazda a floor two different set ups for which you already know what you’re going to have to do if you haven’t already is disconnect the trans linkage put the trans in park and the shifter in park and try to measure it it will take some time and patience because this is not made for this car you might have to have a machine shop make something or go to local junkyard and start going through some cars to get something to work hope this helps

Q: 351Windsor v8 OHV to SOHC swap? Possible / practical or not?
Running a 1974 Ford Gran Torino Elite, with a 351 Windsor V8 OHV carbuerated with a holley carb. Don’t mind putting in a good bit of money, right now I’m merely in the planning stage. I was just wondering, as I’ve been doing my research on engine components; My beloved car uses an overhead valve camshaft design. I’m not too keen on the whole pushrod idea, but I can live with it if it’s not that big of a deal.

I would like to switch to a SOHC design, as they logically seem more reliable at higher operating speeds. I just want to know if it’s possible, the more I think about it the better off I am with an OHV pushrod design, as they work just fine at low rpm’s and that low end torque is what I’m aiming for. But I still can’t quite see how an OHV design, while it would be stable at low rpm’s, how it would be more efficient than a SOHC as there’s more mass against your operation thanks to that pushrod.

Regardless I’m still aiming for a low-end powerband, so my land-yacht doesn’t have to struggle with daily commute but can still get up there quite quickly should I decide to bring it to the tracks, as my brother owns a 99 trans am with an LS1 motor, and I would like to at least give him some decent competition. I know that featherlight car would get up to speed much quicker than my tank, but I’d still like to be able to compete so I’m aiming for low end torque, as my tank’s a bit more stable and can handle more stress at lift-off.

So it all boils down to this. Aiming for low to medium range torque, typically 1500-5500 RPM powerband, and I see my OHV camshaft design as a hinderance. Is it possible to swap to a SOHC or DOHC design, and would that be practical for what I’m aiming for?

If it is possible and practical, I do intend to replace my cylinder heads and intake manifold at the same time as the cam, and thinking about upping the carb as well all at once, so I can set up for the perfect combination here. Thanks for your help!
EDIT:: After looking at some edelbrock intake manifolds as well as heads, I noticed it’s possible to modify the 351W into a mock Boss 351, by utilizing an intake they’ve designed specifically for this purpose in conjunction with Performer RPM Cleveland heads. I was thinking of going with the Edel Performer RPM cleveland heads and E-Boss intake, as well as an edelbrock hydraulic roller camshaft kit. Is there anything I’m missing? Let me know your opinion on this. Again, trying to compete with a ‘99 Trans Am Firebird running an LS1.
Edit 2: The mock-351 Boss I’m talking about is more well known as a 351 Clevo / Clevor.
Edit 3: Yes, I am talking about converting my OHV windsor to an OHC.

A: When you say you want to go to a SOHC design, are you talking about converting your 351W to OHC, or getting a whole new OHC engine ?? I’ve never seen an OHC conversion of any Ford small blocks. On a SOHC complete engine, the current Ford V-8 are a very wide engine, but it might fit between your shock towers. How ’bout a 351W stroker ?? You want both low to medium rpm range torque, and cubic inches is torque. I have a 351W stroked to 427 in my ‘89 Mustang, and torque is not a problem. You can get a decent 351W427 short block for two or three grand, & do the top of the engine yourself. The cubic inches will give you torque, and a nice set of Trick Flow aluminum heads will give you higher rpm horsepower.

Q: sam peckinpah question?
Other people with a lot of film knowledge and good judgement, help me out here. Straw dogs was awesome, the wild bunch was great, but i have yet to see “bring me the head of alfredo garcia”. I have two questions:

1. What was the whole deal with sam peckinpah, drunk, with his tie around his head and calling john wayne a f@ggot?

2. If you have seen “bring me the head of alfredo garcia”, tell me how you thought about it, if it’s true peckinpah style, and if its worth watching (very eager).

If it helps, some of my favorites are CITY OF GOD, AMERICAN BEAUTY, BRICK, ICHI THE KILLER, DAWN OF THE DEAD (1974 of course), STAND BY ME, RESERVOIR DOGS, BLOOD SIMPLE, MEMENTO, SUNSHINE, BLOW, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. Plus many more foreign films many of you wouldnt know of. I have an open mind for movies and a wide variety of taste. Best recently made movies for me (since i prefer the classics) is between Watchmen (have all original comics as well) and Gran Torino.

A: yeah it’s a typical peckinpah movie, about a bounty placed on a ladie’s man who gets a crime boss’s daughter pregnant, I won’t ruin it by telling you anymore about it, but it’s well worth a watch. not my favourite by any means, I prefer straw dogs and cross of iron to be honest. it was ridiculed and got a terrible reception when it was released but has since become a cult classic.

as regards to the john wayne story, peckinpah was a raging alcoholic prone to violent mood swings and was known to say that he could never direct a movie if he was sober. obviously he had some beef with john wayne and this incident was the result. I’m not very knowledgable about his personal life or exploits but I’m sure there are plenty of books written about him…
